Buck Knives is a 4th generation family-owned business located in Post Falls, Idaho.
Our founder, Hoyt Buck, was looking for a better way to temper steel so it would hold an edge longer. His unique approach produced the first Buck Knife in 1902. In 1964, Buck became an industry leader with the revolutionary Model 110 Folding Hunter. This drive for ingenuity & excellence is what has made Buck the successful knife maker it is today.

-
Why are Buck knives famous for holding their edge?
We choose the right steel for the job. Then we heat-treat or temper each blade with our patented process to meet the demands of the intended use of the knife. So, the knife you buy is sharper out-of-the-box, holds an edge longer, and is easier to re-sharpen.
Can I get my knife sharpened?
Buck provides a Spa Service - for only Buck branded knives - which restores the factory edge on your knife and gives it a basic polish for a fee of $6.95/knife.
-
Famous for Holding an Edge
Buck is a market leader in edge retention thanks to our steel selections and heat treat process pioneered by industry famous, Paul Bos.

Verbose version - The reviews are right; the handle is big, bulky, and square-ish which limits the versatility of this knife. The whole thing is huge, more like a small sword than a knife. It's almost the same style as the 119 but the bulky handle and broader blade make it seem like something else entirely after you use it for a while. I used this thing on a few family camping trips and if I'm being honest, it was never truly "necessary" although it was a joy to use when I did find an excuse (making fires, chopping food, etc). It's big and rowdy, it can do anything (I haven't cleaned any animals with it but I doubt I will; even though it could likely do it, I'd prefer something smaller). I'm a normal sized guy, 5'8 with normal hands and at times I feel like I'm holding Andre the Giant's knife. I made some feather sticks and what not and got some fires going with it, but after very little light work the large handle became tiresome to me. If I was a huge guy looking for a blade my size, this would be it because it's great looking and of really great quality. I'm not, so I think that this will just be something I bust out once in a while for heavier tasks, like a buddy for my hatchet.
Having griped about it, I gotta say that it is a pretty impressive knife to the casual observer and knife nerd alike. It is what it says it is; it is the 119's bigger beefier brother with the handle to prove it. I've largely been impressed with Buck and this is no exception. When my friends have seen this thing they've all freaked out; it's legitimately awesome.
One other thing, the grind isn't totally uniform but I don't think it's really noticeable to the average person and I can probably fix it with my belt sander so I'm not docking a star, just noting that the fit/finish isn't 100% even if it's darn close. The grind issue is the only technical issue i have with the knife, otherwise it's exactly what I expected and it's great.
Many people confuse full-tang handles with stick-tang aka hidden-tang. A full-tang means you see the tang all the way around the handle; it is the full width of the handle. In contrast the Buck 119 has a stick-tang or hidden-tang in which the tang runs through the handle and you don’t see it, and the handle is mechanically secured to the tang with a pummel on the back. Full-tang handles usually offer more strength for tougher jobs.
Lastly, I’ve read some poor reviews of Buck knives, mainly because of defects upon arrive or failures afterwards, not actually because of functionality and their purpose. I am a knife collector and I’ve recently rekindled my love for Buck knives. I own quite a few Buck knives and have never experienced a defect or failure, of course I haven’t put all of them through rigorous use or test yet, but those that I have did not disappoint me. To those that are turned off by defects or failures of Buck knives, I ask that you give them another try. No one is perfect and defects unfortunately do get through, but should not be seen as a true representation of Buck. Unless, you continued to experience defects and failures with their knives. Then I’d agree with you on your reviews and this would hold true with any product or manufacture. But I have a hard time believing that Buck would continue to knowingly produce poor quality knives. Also, make sure you get a knife with the right blade material for your needs. Buck uses several different metals for their blades, some stronger than others. And to avoid counterfeits..it happens, always check the seller and do a little research to make sure you are getting a true Buck knife.
If the handle is too slippery or polished for you a light sanding will fix that too.
This Knife will probably out last you. Your children & grandchildren will cherish it long after you are gone. It will probably be their favorite knife too!
